Automatic updates are on but it shows they're off?

I'm using XP Professional.. my problem is that I keep getting this security center notification saying that automatic updates are off, so I click on that turn on automatic updates button in security center, but nothing happens. When I tried it again, it said that security center is unable to turn on automatic updates. So when I tried to turn on automatic updates manually (My computer > properties > automatic updates) I click apply then OK but security center still shows that automatic updates are off. I tried restarting many times it doesn't work.

You try to click at START and select Run, and then type: msconfig
After that select the Services and highlight Automatic Updates, maybe you already untick (stopped) the this service, you just tick it back, click OK and restart your computer try and see...
