Why Mobile Application Development Can Be Difficult

Don't believe the experts, handheld application development is more difficult than you'd expect. There are many explanations for this:

Too many platforms to develop for: One of the first problems yourun into is which mobile platforms to support. Is it better to limit yourself to the iPhone or should you go for a larger set of handhelds? The device you choose has a huge influence what your application can or cannot do.
Very different app models: Limiting yourself to a single platform isn't enough, often you'll still have multiple application models to choose from. On the BlackBerry platform, for example, you have to decide between creating a proper BlackBerry app or a more portable Java Micro Edition (Java ME) app.
Steep learning curves: Developing a handheld application often requires learning a different programming language (like Objective C) and/or a new set of programming tools (like NetBeans). Because the market is so diverse, software developers often have a hard time finding useful development tips.
Confusing data storage choices: Unless you're developing an online-only application, you'll need to persist data locally, and there are so many options for doing this. If you have complex data requirements may be best served by a complete mobile database. Simpler applications may get away with simple data persistence options, but data exchange with external databases can be quite more complex in those cases.
Consumer versus enterprise targeting: While Apple has shown that there is a lot of money to be made serving the consumer market, there is still a lot of money to be made with business-focused applications. These markets are vastly different, however, and you simply cannot target both of them with the same application.
Real startup costs: Handheld application development is not inexpensive. Experienced programmers are in demand and charge accordingly, and there are real costs in terms of devices and carrier charges.

Because of these difficulties you might wonder why anyone bothers to create handheld applications. The benefits outweigh the expenses. The return on investment of a mobile enterprise application can be tremendous, especially for apps aimed at field personnel. The demand for mobile consumer apps means there's a lot of money for companies able to satisfy that demand.

Handheld app development is a lot simpler if you do your homework. If you want to write a good enterprise application you'll need to invest in a good mobile enterprise application tool. On the consumer side, you'll still need good development tools, but you'll also need a lot of flash and a simple user interface.

Succeeding at handheld app development requires a lot of thought and planning.
