Radio Microphones - Information
Radio microphones (or wireless microphones) are microphones that are not directly tethered to any sound recording equipment, for example an audio recorder or video camera.
They are more commonly know as radio mics or wireless mics, where the original audio cable is replaced by frequency transmitting technology. Audio can be transmitted with radio microphones either digitally, or through FM, AM, UHF and VHF radio frequencies.
Better, more advanced radio mics give you the option to change which frequency you are on, enabling both the usage of multiple microphones, and eliminating the possibility of interference.
It is believed that the initial radio microphones came from the original compander microphone invented in 1976 by Nady Systems, who was recognised in 1996 with an Emmy award for his technical contribution to the field.
Advantages of Radio Microphones
Using radio mics creates a series of advantages for the user. A starting advantage is that radio microphones eliminate the health and safety risk of trailing microphone cables. Secondly, and as a result of this, you give the freedom of movement to the wearer of the microphone as they are not joined via a cable. A further advantage is that you remove the pressure placed on a cable when it is flexed, which often causes them to break.
Radio Microphone Negative Points
Despite having such advantages, radio microphones also have some select disadvantages. For a start, radio microphones have a high power consumption so can drain two way radio batteries very quickly. Radio mics, depending on how expensive the system, are also range limited. There is the chance that another electrical item could interfere with the signal, causing disruption. Lastly, you are limited to the number of radio microphones you can use at the same time due to frequency clashing.
