If DC current is quickly stopping and starting/pulsating, will a multimeter give an average of voltage.?
I am testing out the current controlling the speaker on an alarm clock. I know that it beeps. I am guessing that the beeping is caused from current going to the speaker, then stopping, and so on. My multimeter never says the voltage is at 0, it just shows voltage slightly changing ranging from 10-13V. I am confused. Does this slight change cause the beeping sound.
Grintable usually gives good answers, but I'm not sure any part of the grintable answer is correct. There are many designs of multimeters which behave differently with pulses. I'm surprised that you did not read much less than 10 to 13 volts measuring on the speaker terminals. Worse the beep is perhaps 1200 hertz ac which is off more tenths of a second than it is on, so the average RMS voltage is likely less than one volt. The DC voltage should also be less than one volt, perhaps zero volts. Many digital multimeters take several samples per second, so they are confused by pulse rates that are less than about one per second. Perhaps you are measuring from the speaker terminal to ground, or the speaker has an open circuit, or it is an electronic beeper rather than a speaker. Neil
