The working of the high power green laser pointer
The infrared laser output in the case of a kaleidoscopic green laser pointer gets focused into a small crystal of Neodymium doped Yttrium ortho Vanadate. This then turns into a longer wavelength of 1064nm. This 1064nm output beam gets absorbed in an adjacent crystal of Potassium Titanyl Phosphate that resonates at twice the pump light frequency in order to produce an output of 532nm green laser light. Even though instant permanent blindness will not occur with a momentary, glancing exposure, but visual damage can occur if the beam is allowed to enter the eye and it falls upon the same area of the retina for more than 1/4 second. This is an unlikely occurrence, due to the aversion and blink reflex.
