How do guitar pedal circuit boards work?
How does a guitar pedals circuit board actually work?
Like just say a distortion pedal, what actually makes the distortion? is there a certain chip or something, then what does all the capacitors and transistors and resistors do?
and same with Boost pedals?
Please explain!
Keep in mind distortion effects were around long before chips existed. Microchips are simply circuits made up of transistors, capacitors and logic gates in a very small package.
Distortion is an over driven signal. This is achieved by using transistors ( or tubes in high end hardware) to gain the audio signal beyond it's normal level. In the case of a guitar amp that has a preamp gain, distortion is achieved by raising the preamp to a very high level and keeping the post amp ( output stage ) at a lower level. The signal sent to the output amplifier is saturated or distorted. The Output amp the amplifies the distorted signal even more for output to the speaker.
Flanges are a variance of the sine wave itself. Flangers use capacitors and coils to affect the signal and cause a frequency distortion. Delays are a tank circuits that samples and holds a snapshot of the incoming signal. After a user determined amount of time the signal is released causing a delay or echo.
