what is the applied rms voltage?
An AC voltmeter uses a bridge rectifier with silicon diodes and a PMMC instrument with a full scale deflection of 75 micro amp. If the meter coil resistance is 900 ohm and the multiplier resistance is 708k ohm , calculate the applied rms voltage when the volmeter indicated full scale.
The RMS (Root Mean Square) voltage is the voltage that has a heating effect, so the equivalent of DC. In this case the voltage for 708.9K and 75uA is 53.1675V (which is 13,333 ohms per volt incidentally). With a bridge rectifier there would be an additional voltage across the two silicon diodes in series, lets say that is 1.4V. Thus the voltage would be 54.5675V for a steady DC situation or the average value of a sine wave.
The Permanent Magnet Moving Coil meter responds to average current. Assuming a sine wave voltage has been rectified, the average current is not the same as the RMS current, so a correction must be applied. The average is 0.637 of the peak, and the RMS is 0.707 of the peak, so multiply the Average value by 1.1099 to get the RMS value. Note this correction is only valid for a sine-wave. The answer is 60.564V RMS.
