Electric wiring for small homemade robot?
i'm making a robot for Science Olympiad, and one of the issues i'm currently having is with this control box i bought from radio shack....it has 15 keypad buttons(3 columns and 5 rows) on the front which connect using an 8 pin plug. my question is how i could use the B(row 1, column 2) which connects pins 4 and 5 as a forward drive switch for a small electric motor, and have button H(2,3) pins(4-8) reverse the polarity and spin the motor backwards? I drew up a few schematics, but it seems each would involve a short curcuit. any help with this would be great!
PS-if anyone knows of any programmable chips (such as the BASIC II stamp) for a reasonable amount of money ($100 is my limit) please let me know about them - i'm only a junior in HS and neither robotics or electronics are my exact area of expertise, but computer programming is my domain
Your "control box" is a 3 by 5 matrix keypad and is designed as an input device for low powered digital or analog circuitry. Therefore it is only designed to pass very small electrical currents. If you attach it directly to a motor it will not likely last too long. And as you have stated there is also the problem of short circuits in your different design attempts.
If you only want to use the keypad to activate the motor and swap directions and are not interested in controlling the speed of the motor then you can use a simple circuit called a bidirectional motor driver which will allow a small amount of current (as from your keypad) to control the larger amount of current necessary to spin the motor.
If you need to vary the speed of the motor or do any additional functions with the same keypad then you will need a microcontroller or other circuitry in addition to the motor driver.
Please email me at olin1963@yahoo.com and I will give you more specifics on some easy ways to achieve your goals. Please include any other info about the motor and battery specs you may have (motor type, voltage, current, wattage, rpm, horsepower, additional features, speed control, etc.).
