A Quilt Can Be Both Beautiful And Functional
After a long, hard day, being able to retreat into a comfortable bedroom can help you to relax. Since you will notice the look of the room first, you should consider how it is decorated. If you want a cozy, snug environment, you might want to use quilts to add just the charming touch you need.
You might want to consider purchasing a complete quilt set for your bed. Most of the sets, except for twin sizes, will have a quilt and two pillow shams. A four piece set usually has a throw pillow included, although some substitute dust ruffles. A complete bedding collection may also include sheets that match the quilt.
It is not difficult to find modern quilt sets for any size of bed. Rarely, however, will you be able to find an heirloom or antique set for a queen or king. It is even less common to find a set, and you will normally only be able to purchase an antique quilt. If you want shams, you can buy new ones, perhaps in a solid shade, that will match your quilt.
Quilts can also look inviting when displayed on the wall. King quilts can cover a lot of space and make nice backdrops when hung at the head of a bed. Do not use nails to hang your quilts, however. Stitch a rod pocket on the back of the quilt, sewing it on by hand and limiting the stitching to the back and filling. A pocket about four inches wide allows you to insert a rod to hang the quilt. Some people use ornate curtain rods to mount their quilts on the wall.
Racks that hang on the wall provide an option for displaying quilts either permanently or overnight. The folded quilt hangs over the bar, and many styles have shelves above the bar to hold the pillows. There are also floor racks that let you drape the quilt as either a display or when not in use.
You can extend your quilt's life with careful cleaning. Have antique quilts cleaned by a professional who has experience with vintage fabrics. Some modern ones can be laundered by machine, but one that does not have an agitator is safest. Vacuum those you have on display three or four times a year so that dust will not penetrate into the material. Those that are hung on racks should also be refolded occasionally to prevent dust and fade lines. Keep quilts out of the sun, particularly if they are antiques, and try to rotate your displays a couple of times yearly to help save the color.
Quilts have been made for centuries to add beauty to the room and provide warmth at night. Initially, the tops were pieced together from whatever scraps were available. The main focus was on creating economical bedding for the family. Before long, the patterns became too numerous to count. While cotton was commonly used, more expensive fabrics such as velvet, satin, or combinations are also to be found. If the desire is to create a cozy, inviting room, quilts may provide the perfect accessory.
