Will cutting off the small tab on a rotary switch make it incapable of switching?

Will cutting off that tab break the switch?
I cut the tabs off potentiometers when I'm mounting them in a box, and was told earlier today that cutting the tab off the rotary switch would keep it from being able to switch.
Is this true?
Edit: I don't mean the anti-rotation tab that keeps allows you to only use a certain number of switches.
I mean the tab standing up on the side, that generally gets in the way when mounting it under a cover. (It can't be moved)
Removing the tab will not in itself stop the switch from working, but if the switch body rotates in the mounting hole when the knob is turned it will not switch.
You say you have cut the tabs off potentiometers (as have I) but the switch may take quite a bit more torque to operate than a pot and the mounting for the switch may slip where your pots held.
I would recommend keeping the tab and drilling a hole for it in the box. However, I have shortened the tab when mounting rotary switches in thin panels, but not removed it entierly
