How Is Discography (Discogram) Performed?
Diskography, also called diskogram, is a strictly diagnostic procedure utilized to see if one's back pain is being caused by intervertebral disks. This can be from degenerative disc disease or a ruptured disk. The procedure involves pressurizing discs with an injection of sterile liquid to induce pain in the affected discs. Discography helps the arizona pain doctors plan a course of treatment. This treatment may include phoenix physical therapy, interventional pain management, chiropractic treatment, medications, or spinal decompression. Individuals lie on their stomach or on their sides on a pain table, and a fluoroscopy x-ray machine is used. The diskogram is not therapeutic at all, it is merely a diagnostic tool to assist with treatment.
An IV is utilized to administer medications which help relax the individual. It is important for patients to be awake enough to tell the doctor what they are feeling during the procedure. One of the local anesthestics, like lidocaine or marcaine, are used to numb skin and soft tissue down to the disk. Using real time x-ray (fluoroscopy) to detail the exact location the AZ pain management physician places a guide needle through the numbed track to the outside part of the disc. A smaller needle is inserted through the guide needle into the center of disc. This may be utilized for one or more disks.
Once all the needles are placed the discs are pressured one at at time with injections of contrast dye~Once all the spinal needles are put in the disk spaces are pressurized one after another with contrast dye injections. Patients experience either pain or pressure with each of the injections. If a person has pain it is vital to compare it to whether or not it is the same as what's experienced on a daily basis. If it is pain this may indicate a diseased disc. After each disc is tested images are taken with the fluoroscopic unit, which is a form of real time x-ray.
The needles are removed and patients may be taken for a CT scan to obtain additional images of the inside of the discs. A CT shows varying angles of the disk in higher resolution, which may show the contrast leaking out of the disc, which means the disk has a tear or crack in it.
Discography typically takes less than one hour to do. The procedure may cause soreness for a few days. Patients are usually advised to take acetaminophen or ibuprofen and ice the affected area for several minutes each day till the soreness resolves.
