Fire Safety Decision Points for Push Button Switch Selection
Push button switches have a wide variety of uses, especially in the automotive and electronics industries. They can be found all over the internet in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, but when broken down by functionality there are only two types with very different uses. The first type commonly referred to as a latching requires just one push to stay on indefinitely until pushed a second time to turn off. The second type commonly know as a momentary switch turns on when pushed and turns off automatically when the operator removes pressure from the button. The momentary switch offers greater control over short term operations while the latching switch offers greater efficiency for long term operations. Choosing the best switch is an important decision for safety conscious consumers when dealing with the administration of flammable materials and live fire. A good example of this can be found in the automotive industry with aftermarket exhaust flamethrowers where choosing the right switch is a critical fire safety decision point.
The mere mention of an exhaust flamethrower is enough to make any mother ground her teenage son, take away his keys, and stop giving him money for a very long time. - The Senile - With age comes wisdom and a loss in the ability to use it. Old men trying to relive the youth they never had hopped up on medication may become forgetful and unaware of their surroundings. The correct use of a momentary switch over a latching could make all the difference between just another star struck admirer and an intern lifting her head up to say "Senator McCain are you going to turn that flamethrower off before I'm finished?"
If you're not convinced by now that momentary push buttons are the switches of choice for operating exhaust flamethrowers then please stop reading this and check yourself in to the nearest mental health treatment facility. Now that it has been proven that momentary switches are best for short term operations it is important to remember that latching switches are safer for long term activities.
