Facts About Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series
The Ashtanga yoga primary series is known as the Yoga Chikitsa, meaning therapy. It works to realign the spine, detoxify the body as well as improve stamina and flexibility. You may need more than one hour to do the 75 poses of the ashtanga yoga primary series.
Ashtanga yoga primary series starts with surya namaskara or sun salutation, which is done so that the body can be purified and restored to health, before the next pose is done. The surya namaskara is a form of sun salutation and there are two types the surya namaskara A and B. 18 different poses have to be done first before one can move on to the next set of poses.
Before moving on to the standing poses you still have to go through the surya namaskara. As a yogi performs a certain pose that often requires flexibility someone will be guiding him or her through the process. It also allows the body to prepare for the more difficult steps that follow: the seated version of the Yoga Chikitsa. There are a number of positions that the yogi may have to assume in a particular order examples of which are big toe pose, side intense stretch, hands under feet triangle and revolved triangle. These are called the standing ashtanga yoga primary series poses.
The Chikitsa moves to the seated postures after the standing poses. Coordination and concentration are needed in performing the seated poses making it harder than the standing poses. There are several seated poses that a yogi can assume like the embryo in womb, bound angle, wide angle seated fold and the wheel.
Relaxation poses include upward bow, upward lotus, and bound lotus. The yoga session is concluded by performing the pose known as the corpse. This only means that the yogi is at an extensive relaxation that his limbs have reached a level of tranquility that is equal to that of a corpse.
Chikitsa is supposed to be the most difficult form of ashtanga, this is because it is meant to be a long and strenuous workout that will lead you to the ashtanga yoga primary series. Many beginners find it difficult as they begin the workouts, but as the workout session progresses, with the right instructor that will lead you to the ashtanga yoga series, it can prove to be a fun as well as healthy and vital workout session that provides you with mental and physical relaxation as well.
