What do these ratings mean?
NPN silicon, NPN determines the polarity of power supply voltages. Generally the emitter wire should be the most negative, the base lead about .6 volts more positive than the emitter, and the collector lead the most positive of the 3 layers. NPN indicates the polarity of the majority carriers in the 3 semiconductor layers.
Silicon is the bulk semiconductor material, it determines forward bias voltage drops and temperature effects. Its more common than Germanium for example.
HFE is the current gain. for a given base current, the collector current would be 100 times more (at least). (In a typical circuit)
