how come rack units only need to be supported in the front of the unit and not the back?
surely the weight of the unit would snap or at least bend the mounts??
what am I missing?
For most racks, you aren't screwing the machine to the rack directly. You actually install a pair of extensible brackets to the rack. Then, the machine snaps into the back of the brackets, and uses the screws to keep it secured in the front. This way you can pull the machine, like a shelf, and get inside it for maintenance purposes, without having to pull the whole thing out of the rack.
Before that, you simply used the machine below to support the machine(s) on top. Of course this meant if you ever had to pull the machine from the bottom out for some reason, you were in for a world of hurt.
