Heat pump problem and what voltage should I read across my thermostat pins?
Have been having issues with my heat pump...it is either a sticky reversing valve, or a voltage issue to the solenoid. Have a Goodman system and it is tending lately to throw heat in the cool position. Turning off, then on after several minutes sometimes resolves this. From what I understand heat is default with no voltage going to reversing valve. When it is working correctly (throwing cool through vents) between Black (which I assume is ground) and Red/Green/Yellow/Orange I read 10.8 volts. I thought I should read 24v and wonder if this could be a circuit board or transformer issue (which is easier and cheaper than reversing valve replacement). Have an Aprilaire Thermostat. Does anyone know what I should read when off? When on heat? When on cool? Thank you
Are you sure your using ac voltage when your checking it? Sometimes dc will be read about half of ac. but you should have 24v from red to everything while off. So if indoor fan is off you will have 24V from r to g turn fan on and you will read 0 from red to green. So check r to y for cooling if 24v cooling is not on if 0 its on. and so on for all other pins. go to transformer and check voltage stick leads in both wire nuts and check voltage if 24 volts its good if 10 take all wires away and just check the two wires from transformer by themselves if you then have 24 you may have something down the line shorted taking up voltage. if you have 10 at transformer either bad meter or transformer. g fan r power y cooling o reversing valve
