Types and Uses of the Diamond Tool
The diamond is best known for its illustrious sparkle. It has become the world's most renowned precious stone, the ultimate symbol of luxury. The jewel also happens to be the hardest material known to man, so just as diamonds make for pretty trinkets, they can also be used to construct a sturdy, heavy-duty diamond tool for industrial use.
Diamond tools are mostly used to cut through hard and highly abrasive materials. While there is equipment that makes use of naturally occurring diamonds, most cutting tools are made with synthetically manufactured diamonds, which are much easier to come by.
Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT) makes use of a solid, flawless diamond as a sharp cutting edge. With a sharpness that can go up to tens of nanometers, these tools are mainly used for cutting out non-ferrous materials at a high resolution. Diamond pastes are used for polishing materials that require a mirror finish. This type of diamond tool is commonly used in metallurgical samples, and the polishing of glass and other diamonds. Other diamond tools, such as diamond cutting wheels, contain diamond segments around the edges. These segments are made from a bond of metal powder and tiny diamond crystals and are mainly used for grinding hard surfaces such as ceramics and gemstones.
A diamond tool was incorporated into the Rock Abrasion Tool (RAT), which was sent by NASA to Mars in 2003 to collect specimens of the planet's surface. A diamond grinding wheel was attached to the working end of the RAT so it could effectively drill into the planet's rocky red soil.
