Suggestions for a good starter digital SLR camera?

I took a beginning black & white photography class using an SLR film camera. It was a lot of fun. I love the whole process of doing my own printing in the dark room but don't have ready access to one. Now I have a point and shoot digital Canon which is great but doesn't give me much ability to shoot manually. Any suggestions for a good starter reasonably priced digital SLR would be much appreciated.

One vote for the Canon Rebel XT if you wan't the lowest price or the XTi if you wan't a little bit more options.
