I have an 80s car and the tachometer needle bounces between 100rpm for whatever rpm its at?
You'd better look again. A gasoline engine can't idle @ 100 RPM. If what you mean is the motor rpm wanders by 100 RPM, check the motor with an external electronic tachometer. A vacuum leak or dirty fuel delivery system is usually the cause.
Lift the hood at night and using an hand pump bottle filled with water, spray the ignition wires and top of the distributor cap. If you see a fourth of July fireworks city you'll know exactly the electrical parts needs to be replaced. If replacements are needed, use AC-Delco spark plugs and ignition wires. If you want to up-grade the ignition wires to a larger diameter, MSD, Moroso and Taylor are good brands.
