Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem - oscilloscope?
Hi there,
If the Tektronix TDS-220 has a sampling rate of 1 GS/s but its advertised bandwidth is 100MHz, doesn't the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem state that the oscilloscope should be able to completely recreate a signal whose highest frequency is up to 500MHz ? I am confused why this is not the advertised bandwidth.

I've wondered this myself. The minimum rate to avoid aliasing is the Nyquist rate. A sine-wave after sampling at the Nyquist rate looks like a triangle wave. This would be misleading in a visual time-domain sense. Also in order for sampling to occur with some averaging error detection it would need to be above the Nyquist rate.
So for a sine wave to look like a sine wave (after sampling) in time domain it needs more S/s than the Nyquist rate. I think this is necessary for proper signal re-creation for visual purposes.
