what happens in a GC experiment when the column temp. decreases? carrier gas flow increases?
What about the concentration of stationary phase liquid increasedm detector temperature increased, and teh amount of sampe injected decrease?
In GC, a decrease in column temperature causes a longer retention time, carrier gas flow increase shortens retention time; stationary phase (liquid) concentration generally yields longer retention times and in some cases with the more aggressive phases may prevent usable R.T. at all, i.e. the drag on retention times could almost bury small peaks in the baseline. Detector temp has little or no effect as long as it is at least 50 degrees above the highest column temp used; much less than that might cause condensation in the detector line exagerating shapes of peaks as they emerge. The amount of sample has varying effects on occasion depending on whether you are speaking about injecting the same volume of a different concentration (may lead to poor peak symmetry on the trailing edge), or if speaking of increasing the amount by an increase in the volume of the injection. This may not effect the appearance although there is an upper limit with most columns; lesser limit effect with packed columns, more limit effect with capillary(or open tubular) columns.
