Whats the difference with a multimeter and a test light?
Im thinking of getting one as an all around tool for the garage. Can a Multi meter do everything a test light can do? Are they for different jobs/purposes?
All im going to using it for is checking for current, but would welcome anything that would prove useful down the road.
Both are useful.. I grab for my muitimeter more than test light though.
The test light is easy, small, simple to use but can only tell you if you have voltage to X part.
the meter for a std. cheap ne with read amount of AC and DC volts you have, ohms, DC amps up to a set amount, etc.
Like say you want to see if your car's alt. is working right.. A test light will show it puts out voltage, but a meter will tell you if its 8, 10, 12, or 13 volts.. A weak alt that aint keeping battery charged may put out 8 volts... The test light would so it's good.
Also like say your trying to find out why your left front speaker aint working. No voltage in those wires, so the test light asint very usefull..
meter, set it on ohms, touch one lead to the + speaker wire at speaker and other lead to + wire at speaker.. Meter goes from high end of scale to 0 if theres no break in the wire.. Now test - wire same wire.. Hmmm meter's not moving to 0 this time.. Means a break in the - wire somewhere that goes to that speaker
