Recommendations For Finding The Ideal Audio Amplifier
I will have a look at a number of audio amplifiers as well as mini amplifier models and clarify some fundamental expressions to assist you select the ideal amp for your speakers
It is hard to choose the best audio amplifier due to the large amount of models. All of these types have different specs. They are based on different technologies and are available in all kinds of shapes and sizes. This makes it difficult to make a decision which type to pick. You don’t have to be a guru. Just follow some straightforward guidelines and you should be satisfied with your amp.
Amplifiers differ in their size and range from types that will take up a good portion of your living room whereas a number of of the latest mini amplifier models are as tiny as a deck of cards. Many units will be the size of a ordinary audio rack so that you can easily stack it on top of your audio equipment.
The largest part of modern audio amps are based on solid-state technology while a tiny portion is based on tube technology which has been popular over a decade ago. Regrettably, tube amps have quite high audio distortion which describes how much the audio signal is degraded by the amp.
Harmonic distortion of tube amps is often as high as 10%. Solid-state amps will have lower audio distortion. Still, distortion will depend on the particular audio amplifier technology. Some of the most accepted technologies in the past have been "Class-A" and "Class-AB" technologies. These technologies use different arrangements to amplify the sound. Amps based on any of these technologies are also known as "analog amplifiers". Audio amps which are based on these technologies usually have low harmonic distortion. Also, this technology is fairly inexpensive. Though, the downside is that the power efficiency is merely in the order of 20% to 30%. This means that the majority of the electrical power provided to the amplifier is wasted as heat whereas a tiny fraction is used to amplify the audio signal.
In contrast, "Class-D" amplifiers which are also named "digital amplifiers" offer a power efficiency of normally 80 to 90%. This permits the amplifier and power supply to be made much smaller than analog amplifiers. The disadvantage is that many digital amplifiers have larger audio distortion than analog amplifiers though some of the latest models employ a feedback mechanism to reduce distortion to levels of 0.05% and less.
The amp should be capable to provide enough output power to sufficiently drive your loudspeakers which will depend not only on how much power your loudspeakers can tolerate but also on the size of your listening environment. Speaker power handling capability is specified as peak power and average power. The peak power value refers to how much power the speaker can handle for a short period of time whilst the average power handling value denotes how much power you can drive the loudspeaker at constantly without harm.
If you have a fairly small listening environment then 20 to 50 Watts of power should be enough even though your loudspeaker might be rated for 100 Watts or more. Low-impedance speakers generally offer high sensitivity and are less difficult to drive to high volume than high-impedance loudspeakers. Check your amplifier manual to ensure that your amp can drive your speaker impedance.
Lastly, ensure that your amp introduces little noise and has a broad enough frequency response. High-quality amps will have a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 100 dB and a frequency response of no less than 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
