Recovering vintage speakers?
I have a Huge credensa from 1970's from Heathkit. I'm thinking of refinishing the wood to bring in into the 21st century. The speakers sound fantastic so I don't want to remove them, just recover the dated brown and gold covering. What type of fabric will I need and how do I get them out of this unit? Also what is the best paint to go over finished wood. Thanks, It is a big project.
Radio Shack sells an inexpensive speaker cover fabric that is black. You don't necessarily have to use their cloth, just one that is porous enough.
You probably will have to remove the existing speakers, the panel that the speakers mount on, and then the fabric is usually mounted to that panel. Treat the speakers gently and they should be fine to be unscrewed from the panel and then reattached after the you're finished with the new cloth.
As far as painting over the wood, just remember you will need to sand the existing wood a bunch, to get rid of the sheen, so the paint will adhere properly. I think an oil based paint would be best, but i'm not a paint expert. Ask one of the guys at the paint store, they should be able to advise you. And again....sand it A LOT !
