How much amperage will a voltage regulator draw?
Lets say I have a Transformer giving me 10 volts AC, and can supply 3 amps. I use a Diode Bridge and not its about 9.9V DC. I collect this to some filter capacitors and then to a Voltage regulator that can handle 1 amp. Will the regulator always draw 1 amp?, or does it depend on the load that I put on the regulator? Can I control the amperage with a variable resistor or something?
Your own phrase answers it - A Voltage Regulator that can handle 1 amp
This means the regulator maximum current is 1 amp above this it will probably overheat and fail or the voltage output will reduce to limit the current
The current drawn depends on the equivalent resistance of the load connected I = V/R or I = E/R depends on where you live.
If no load is connected there is a very small current draw possibly a few milliamps due to internal circuit of the regulator
