How to make a basic strip of battery powered LED's.?
Hi. I'm certainly no electrician, so I'm after your help. I have an oak beam in my house along one of the walls but it sits about an inch away from the wall. I want to put a strip of white LED's under there to glow from behind the beam but I don't know how. It would have to be battery powered (by AA batteries if possible - only because I know they will fit under the beam! Not sure if that's realistic or not?) and just be turned on and off by a small switch. So just a really basic strip of white LED bulbs powered by a battery and a switch.
Is it as simple as that? If so, how do I do it and what will I need? I'm guessing a trip to Maplin would be in order.
Thanks in advance!
A few white LEDs aren't going to run long on batteries.
You will need wire, a few resistors, battery holder, LEDs, batteries (or better a transformer), and solder and soldering iron.
The number of resistors and values will be determined by the power of the LEDs and the number of them and also how you wire them, ie. in parallel or serial.
Ideally you want to look at running a transformer to them as 2 AA betteries really won't last that long even with just a few LEDs.
If you really want to run a few LEDs for a few hours at a time of batteries then you could consider buying a battery operated LED set (there's lots around on eBay and Christmas decoration, I got a white set in the sales last January for just a few quid). The beauty of it is that they're already wired up for you.
