Genetically modified blue roses for their gardens!
The world's first roses blue have been on display at the International Flower Exhibition in Tokyo and will be available to the public next fall.
They have been genetically modified and implanted with a gene synthesized pigments cleverly thought.
It was the first time that these blue roses were exposed in public and are attracting much attention because they are really unusual.
The beautiful roses were developed by a company based in Australia, a subsidiary of Suntory. The company has invested the sum of 3 billion yen to create these blue roses and carnations blue, this project has been ongoing since 1990.
The company's scientists were the first to introduce the gene that produces delphinidin, the pigment that produces a deep blue color and is not found naturally in roses.
It was four years ago that the first genetically modified blue roses were produced even though further research is needed to be sure to grow.
Roses have been cultivated for over 5,000 years and, apparently, there are about 25,000 different species of roses. The most common color a red rose, pink, white and yellow.
The blue rose is said to refer to unrequited love, as it symbolizes the quest for the impossible. This seems to make sense!
